GPT-4 vs GPT-3.5: Five Main Differences

Five Key Differences Between GPT-4 and GPT-3.5

On March 14, OpenAI, a company that does artificial intelligence (AI) research and is funded by Microsoft, unveiled GPT-4, the most recent iteration of its big language model (LLM). Generative Pre-trained Transformer, or GPT-4, has several advantages over GPT-3.5, the language model that underpinned the popular chatbot ChatGPT's November release. Although the version number is iterative, OpenAI provided several important use cases in which GPT-4 will outperform GPT-3.5 during its introduction presentation.

We examine five significant ways in which GPT-4 claims to be superior to GPT-3.5 as the tool is now made available to paying customers who subscribe to OpenAI's 'ChatGPT Plus' premium usage model as well as in the form of application programming interfaces (APIs) for developers to build GPT-4-based products.

Multi-Modal Inputs:

The style of managing inputs is the primary distinction between GPT-3.5 and its more recent incarnation, GPT-4. GPT-4 will allow users to submit photos along with their queries, unlike GPT-3.5, which only allowed users to submit text for results through ChatGPT. OpenAI president and cofounder Greg Brockman demonstrated how GPT-4 could comprehend a drawing of a website's wireframe (the fundamental structure of a site) and generate code for the whole website itself during the GPT-4 presentation.

In another demonstration, OpenAI added an image and asked the chatbot to describe what was humorous about the image. GPT-4 can comprehend photos and provide users with written responses based on the context of the image, but GPT-3.5 was unable to do so.

Currently, the capability is only available to one business, US-based visual processing startup Be My Eyes, but OpenAI promised that it will eventually make the GPT-4 image processing technology available to other companies – without specifying when that will be.

Supports Multiple languages:

GPT3.5 was only based on English, but GPT-4 was taught in 26 different languages, including five Indian languages: Bengali, Urdu, Punjabi, Marathi, and Telugu. The existence of more languages in the GPT-4's data sets will, in the opinion of experts, enable more localized language use cases through the most recent LLM, even though the Indian languages perform less accurately than the other languages in terms of the results that are created based on them.

Greater Reasoning and Accuracy:

The business said that the new LLM was more capable of reasoning and could provide more accurate findings as a result of the higher amounts of data and RAM used in GPT-4. The additional data points required to train the model make GPT-4 "82% less likely to reply to requests for forbidden content and 40% more likely to deliver factual responses than GPT-3.5," according to the company's official page.

With the addition of longer inputs, GPT-4 may now be able to produce long-form textual content, according to OpenAI.

The new model would provide "fewer surprises" when it comes to responding to user requests, according to OpenAI, which also stated that it has concentrated particularly on responding to "malicious" prompts.

Bigger memory and more data:

Although OpenAI did not quantify the quantity of data points used to train GPT-4, it asserts that the model is built on a far larger amount of data points than GPT-3.5 was. The latter's training database contained 175 billion data points. According to a sector expert who spoke with TechCircle, researchers anticipate that GPT-4 would be built on about 3 trillion data points, expanding the quantity of knowledge that it "knows" and has processed.

The new approach has, according to OpenAI, "integrated more human feedback, including feedback supplied by ChatGPT users," behind GPT-4, according to its webpage.

Also, the business said in its developer presentation that GPT-4 had a greater memory or the volume of data it can access and analyze to respond to a single user query. This was 4,096 "tokens" for GPT-3.5 (and thus, ChatGPT), but for GPT-4, it has been doubled to 32,768 tokens.

As a result, GPT-4 will have 8 times as much information available to it when responding to user queries as the GPT-3.5-powered ChatGPT, providing the new version with greater context and background. This reflects an increase in GPT-4's total memory of 8x.

Improved safety procedures and Steerability:

The safety requirements of ChatGPT based on GPT-3.5 had been a source of concern for many analysts and industry experts, however, GPT-4 appears to offer improved safety protocols for a safer chatbot. While creating GPT-4, OpenAI claimed to have consulted with 50 experts in AI security and safety. Also, GPT-3.5's training data was used to enhance the security of GPT-4's output.

The chatbot will be able to take on numerous personas upon request, however, there are some restrictions that OpenAI has incorporated into the system, the company said during the presentation. The ability of the chatbot to adopt new personalities is known as "steerability," and according to OpenAI, it is this ability that caused GPT-3.5 to produce malicious results. This ability will be improved in GPT-4, according to OpenAI.
