Understanding Instagram's Explore Feed Algorithm: Personalization, Signals, and Transparency

According to Adam Mosseri, the Head of Instagram, the platform doesn't rely on a single algorithm for its operation. Instead, it takes into account various signals, including user activity, post information, information about the person who posted, and the user's interaction history.
Regarding the Explore feed, Instagram considers certain actions as particularly significant, such as likes, saves, and shares. For example, if a user shares a specific type of post with a friend, they are more likely to see similar content.

Instagram also takes into account the posts that immediately capture the user's attention when they open the Explore feed. If, for instance, a user frequently engages with fashion-related posts upon opening Explore, similar content will be given higher priority and appear more frequently.
The company states that it assesses the popularity of a post to determine its relevance in the Explore feed. This includes signals like the number of likes, comments, shares, and saves a post receives. These signals have a greater impact in the Explore feed compared to the main feed or Stories.
If a user has a history of viewing a particular profile, they will see more posts from that user in their Explore feed, even if they aren't following them. Instagram suggests that historical data helps the algorithm understand user behavior, while recent interaction signals within the past few weeks contribute to creating a more personalized feed.
Instagram is committed to reducing the visibility of offensive posts in the Explore feed. However, if a user follows a friend who shares something offensive, those posts may still appear. Instagram provides options to unfollow, block, mute, hide, or report content if users are uncomfortable with certain types of posts in their feed.
In response to concerns about "shadowbanning," Instagram aims to be transparent. It has implemented features like Account Status to help users understand why their account's content may not be recommended. This allows users to address any problematic content, either by deleting it or appealing the decision if they believe Instagram made a mistake.
